Djouvensley was born in Jeremie, but his mother sent him to live with his aunt in Port-au-Prince when he was very little because she was more financially stable. However, her neighborhood in Port-au-Prince became increasingly violent, and they eventually had to flee back to Jeremie with basically nothing but the clothes on their backs and whatever they could fit in a backpack.
Now, he lives with his mother and aunt in a small, crowded home in Jeremie. His aunt sells hard-boiled eggs on the street to survive but because they lack startup capital, they rely on credit to purchase their goods, leaving her with only a slim profit after repaying their lenders. Life was more stable in Port-au-Prince, but they’re grateful to be in Jérémie—because at least here, they are safe.
Djouvensley loves school, and he finds joy in singing and drawing. When we first met Dvouvensley, he was going to forced to drop out of school because his mother couldn’t afford tuition payments, but now his school is covered, and he’s beginning to see hope for a brighter future.
