Hemie is 5 years old, and she lives in Jeremie, Haiti, with her parents and three older siblings in a partially finished home that they rent. Her father teaches at a local high school, and her mother is a licensed nurse, but she is currently unemployed. Despite both parents’ dedication, low wages and unemployment made it impossible for them to pay for her school. Hemi is bright, creative, and full of curiosity, but poverty stood in the way of her education. Now she is in school and eager to learn and grow.
