Nehémie lives with her parents and cousins in a small, simple house in a rural community just outside of the city of Jeremie. Although she is their only child, their household is full because her mother has welcomed several others into their home. Nehémie’s four-year-old cousin has lived with them since she was just a year old, after her parents in Port-au-Prince were no longer able to care for her. Another cousin, a two-year-old boy, also lives with them because his mother died. And her mother has become a mother for all three of the children. There is also young adult family member who lives with them.
Therefore, her parents are financially supporting four dependents when their only steady source of income is her father’s job working security at a local bank for very low wages. Her mother is trained as a nurse, but she hasn’t been able to find steady work for a long time, so they are struggling just to make ends meet. They’ve managed to get Nehémie through to 6th grade, but they were falling behind on tuition payments, and she was on the verge of dropping out.
Though she can be a bit shy and timid, Nehémie loves school and enjoys learning. Math is her favorite subject, and she also enjoys reading in her free time. She loves music and sports as well, and like many children her age, she is curious about the world and eager to grow. Thanks to her sponsorship, Nehémie will be able to continue her education and this will open the door to new possibilities, positioning her for a brighter future.
