Vanessa was always the one taking care of everyone in her family when they were sick from the time she was a child. Caring for others is an important part of her identity, so she believes becoming a nurse is a path to fulfilling her personal calling. However, the road toward the dream of becoming a nurse has not been an easy one. When we first met Vanessa, she was living with her brother and sister after both of her parents passed away. The difficult economic climate and the scarcity of formal employment in Haiti made it challenging for Vanessa’s siblings to financially support her education, and she was struggling to pay for her final year of high school. Now she is in her senior year at Modern University of Haiti, and she will soon become a college graduate.
