Jerissa
Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Nursing

Jerissa lives in the town of Jeremie with her mother and 2 older sisters. Her mother is a brave woman who does her best to support her children, but her small income as a small street vendor is not much for a family of four. Ever since she was a young child, Jerissa has wanted to become a nurse, and thanks to the support of a generous donor, her dream has become a reality. She says, “I choose this profession because it is a beautiful profession, filled with nobility and love. This science has no borders, and I have a passion for taking care of people, especially children.”

One of the most difficult times in Jerissa’s life was when she had to drop out of school after 6th grade because of her family’s financial situation. This was very discouraging for her, but eventually she was able to return and graduate from high school. This memory is a source of motivation for her, reminding her to never take her education for granted. An enthusiastic person, in her free time she enjoys reading and singing in her church choir.

Education

Education is a step toward a brighter future. However, most families struggle to afford to send their kids to school. When a student is supported through Thrive Ansanm, we cover the cost of their tuition and other school costs, so they can stay in school and succeed.

Technology

Digital access creates opportunity and connection. Most Haitian students don’t have a computer or high-speed internet, but at our resource center local students can access laptops, high-speed internet, and consistent electricity, so they won’t get left behind in today’s digital world.

Mentoring

Mentoring develops the leaders of tomorrow. We match university students with personal mentors who who provide guidance from their experience. These mentors are qualified professionals from the local community, so they understand the unique challenges confronting Haitian students.
