MarcKendy lives in the town of Jeremie with his parents and younger sister. He recently graduated from high school, and he placed in the top 5 of all the students in the area on his university entrance exams. Like nearly everyone in Haiti, his family is just trying to make ends meet. His parents make their own mints and sell them on the street, and his mother told us that this is how she put MarcKendy and his younger sister through school. She said that they may not have a nice big house, but her kids’ education was more important. Yet their meager income would never be enough to send MarcKendy to college, so despite his determination and above-average intelligence, he was in danger of getting stuck like so many other bright young people in Haiti. However, now he will have the opportunity to get his college degree and pursue a brighter future.
