Marie France lives with her mother in a small house on the outskirts of Jérémie. Thirteen years ago, her father passed away leaving just her and her mother. Since childhood, Marie France has dreamed of becoming a nurse or a doctor, a passion deeply rooted in the tragic circumstances of her father’s death. Since the best doctors, hospitals, and clinics in Haiti were concentrated in Port-au-Prince, he was forced to travel several hours for medical care. Sadly, he died on the journey. Marie France believes that if better healthcare had been available in Jérémie, her father might have survived. This experience ignited her desire to work in healthcare.
Her mother is a teacher at a government school, but the low wages of public school teachers in Haiti made it impossible to afford college tuition for Marie France. However, through her scholarship sponsored by HELP for Haiti, she is now studying nursing at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the best nursing school in Jérémie. When she’s not in school, Marie France enjoys crafting and selling gift boxes, a skill she taught herself by watching YouTube videos. She even donates some of these handmade creations to friends and family.
