From Humble Beginnings to Community Leadership: The Inspiring Journey of a Thrive Ansanm Mentor

June 8, 2026

Born and raised in Sainte-Hélène, a low-income neighborhood in Jérémie, Geralda Sylvain is a Thrive Ansanm Mentor, and her journey is a powerful reminder that a person’s future does not have to be determined by their circumstances.

Growing up as one of seven children, Geralda faced many challenges from an early age. Life in a low-income community in Haiti—where access to public services and opportunities is often limited—was far from easy. Yet despite these obstacles, she refused to let her environment define her destiny.

Geralda describes herself as having been a shy and reserved child. It was through participating in community activities that she gradually developed the confidence to speak in public, build meaningful relationships, and believe in her own potential. Her loyalty and strong sense of friendship remain among the values she holds most dear.

Long before joining the Thrive Ansanm mentorship program, Geralda had already demonstrated remarkable determination by teaching herself English. Her passion for learning and personal growth set her apart. Through Thrive Ansanm, she further strengthened her leadership abilities and deepened her commitment to serving her community. Today, she is recognized as one of the organization’s most outstanding mentors.

Her academic excellence also opened new doors. Because of her exceptional performance, she was selected to become an English teacher at Up To Date English School—the very institution where she had once studied as a student.

More recently, Geralda reached another significant milestone in her leadership journey when she was elected president of the Rotaract Club of Jérémie. This respected organization is internationally recognized for its commitment to community service, leadership development, and positive social impact. Her election is a testament to the trust and respect she has earned within her community.

The entire Thrive Ansanm team is incredibly proud of Geralda’s achievements. During our most recent gathering, we had the privilege of presenting her with a Certificate of Excellence in recognition of her outstanding dedication, leadership, and service.

Selecting the best mentor in the Thrive Ansanm program is never easy. Our mentors are highly committed, well-trained, and passionate about supporting young people. Yet Geralda’s exceptional resilience, humility, and leadership have distinguished her in remarkable ways and make her especially deserving of recognition.

Geralda’s story also reflects the transformative impact of our donors and partners. Through their generosity, young people from vulnerable communities across Haiti gain access to mentorship, education, and life-changing opportunities. Geralda stands as living proof that investing in Haitian youth is an investment in the future. By empowering young leaders like her, we help create stronger communities and a brighter future for Haiti.
